Wednesday’s Poetry Prompt: Write an autumn poem.

deciduous lover

i feel like stevie wonder-

i never dreamed

you’d leave this summer.

i’d thought you’d

be a broadleaf evergreen

to the earth of my heart.

i’d thought we’d plant,

spring love through

another season

minus an unforeseen

change of hearts.

i’d thought 

we’d naturally shed

the old us for something new.

now that you’re gone,

I fall back & you've fallen off too.

prematurely,

i’d thought it’d be cold & dry,

recognizing your autumn before mine-

i'm not even triggered

by your condensed light

& compressed air

‘cause i’d conserved enough

potential energy

for me to survive.
