Wednesday’s Poetry Prompt: i can remember these days
Wednesday’s Poetry Prompt: Write an “I Can Blank” poem.
i can remember these days
I can remember seeing you in ICU
Singing Hey Nana to your ears
for your eyes to consciously find me
at the left or right side of your hospital bed
I can remember praying
that this won’t be the last time
Praying for more time because
this isn’t how September '26
was suppose to end
Praying harder because
I know a time like this ain't forever
I can remember from the window
of the 7th floor
a rainbow leaping and loping
across the sky of Fayetteville
no rain in sight
only water flooding
are the rivers from the bays
of my eyes and my mother's
I can remember your arm stretched
parallel to God's bow
I counted it as another blessing
Your hand in mine
indeed a pot of gold
and every time I say squeeze
you gave me life that I wish that
I could squeeze back into you
I can remember consulting
with doctor after doctor
for a second a third to a fourth opinion
Checking your vitals monitor & MyChart
Wishing we were younger again
When your heart didn’t have to
fight to struggle to keep you alive
I can remember nurse after nurse
Watching them bathe you
I speak kindly for you
Telling them my grandma
loves a good bath & to smell good
I can remember
not wanting to leave your side
not wanting to be there too
until it was time for me to take you home
But God beat me to it &
I guess heaven couldn't wait
I can still see 4:44 AM in the hallway
I can still feel the awkward silence
I can still hear she is gone
like a broken record to my ears
I can still hear my heart break over my tears
I can still feel cold skin and thinking
my Grandma hate being cold...
I can still see a flat ART and PPV
reading of 11/ 11 (11)
I took a picture just so that I can
look back and remember:
angels win again
